On December 4th, University College Roosevelt in Middelburg will host a one-day international conference on War, Identity and Cultural Heritage. The speakers in this conference will investigate how heritage is linked to the identities of the communities in areas where conflict is frequent or ongoing. What impact do the physical remains of the past have on the cultural identities of present-day societies? What – if anything – makes such heritage valuable for people’s everyday lives? Can it play a part in processes of post-conflict reconciliation? Are the answers to these questions important or even relevant in finding strategies to deal with the threats to heritage?
